Jeff Ecklund's National Championship Victory Is Twice As Nice In Newport

The 2008 Melges 32 U.S. National Championship was a smashing success with 22 teams challenging for one of the class' most coveted titles. Jeff Ecklund on USA-32 Star found himself on top of the heap this year, his second National Championship win. Teams traveled from near and far including three teams from the west coast and three from the UK. The five race series lasted three days with David Hoyt on USA-184 Goat leading after the first day. But the old saying ‘it's hard getting to the top, it's twice as hard to stay on top’ certainly applied. Ecklund creeped ever so slowly up the leader board playing the consistency card and taking the honors over Hoyt. In second place was Peter Taselaar on USA-169 Bliksem and in third, it was fleet favorites Marty Kullman and Mike Carroll on USA-131 New Wave.
