2008 Melges 32 east coast
championship is on!

Spring time is in full spring swing with the 2008 Melges 32 East Coast Championship held in conjunction with Sailing World's Sperry Top-Sider Annapolis NOOD Regatta in Annapolis, Maryland on April 25-27. More than fifteen teams took to Chesapeake Bay in 2007 with New Wave co-owners Marty Kullman and Mike Carroll celebrating the honors. This year, look for 2008 Key West Champion Jeff Ecklund on STAR going for the win, and adding an international flair to the event is Joe Woods on Red from the UK hoping for his first major success in the Melges 32 fleet.

“It was awesome sailing (in Miami), especially downwind. You get these boats surfing down those big
waves and it’s fun, fast racing.”

Melges 32 midwinter triumph!

No one can deny that the 'Big 3' series of events was just that — BIG! The year kicked off with three awesome events and large fleet competition: ACURA Key West 2008 in January, the Sperry Top-Sider St. Petersburg NOOD during February and the ACURA Miami Grand Prix 2008 in March. In the end, three different venues presented three very deserving winners. Congratulations to each champion and a special thanks to competitors that traveled to participate.

JEFF ECKLUND ON STAR TOPS LARGEST MELGES 32 FLEET EVER. Like patience, consistency is a virtue, especially in the Melges 32 fleet. Joe Woods on Red, came on strong, early in the five-day event. Philippe Kahn on Pegasus 32 showed his stuff too, but Jeff Ecklund from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida topped the fleet by week's end. "Key West is a big event for us, so we are very happy to have won. There are some really great teams out there in the Melges 32 now," commented Ecklund just before accepting the award.

MARTY KULLMAN/MIKE CARROLL ON NEW WAVE WIN ST. PETE'S. Just because the fleet was slightly smaller than Key West, didn't mean that the racing wasn't as fun and intense. This light air venue is a great place to exercise your speed and tactics under challenging conditions. Five teams piled in on the warm and historic Florida city with the New Wave team taking home court advantage to the max.

MICHAEL ILLBRUCK CHAMPIONS MIAMI GRAND PRIX. “Winning is not the issue for us. We are brand new to the class and still have a lot to learn,” said Illbruck, a resident of Munich, Germany. “I was surprised by how well the boats handled in these types of conditions. We were under control the whole time.” That was Illbruck's response after the four-day wild and windy regatta. Twenty teams traveled to compete but it was Illbruck taking the lead from the start, all the way to the finish.
